Angeli del Mare

Every day from the African continent, hundreds of men, women and children cross the waters of the Mediterranean, with the hope of a better future. According to data from UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), more than 5,800 people have died at sea from 2017 to October 2019, not counting the unreported missing.

The reasons for this migration are many: there are those who are fleeing war, in Africa there are currently many ongoing conflicts, in addition to the civil war in Libya and Syria, there are also situations concerning Sudan and Eritrea afflicted by the massacres of Boko Haram. One of the main reasons that push individuals to emigrate to Europe is the fear of persecution and death due to ethnicity, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. Violence against women and child exploitation are the order of the day, just think that from 2017 to 2019, more than 19,000 unaccompanied minors arrived in Italy (data from the Ministry of the Interior).
